Humiliating setback for the Government as judge rules HS2 consultation was ‘so unfair as to be unlawful’ | Mail Online
6th January: The Independent reports that Simon Burns, the minister responsible for taking a chauffeur driven car to work at a cost to the taxpayer of £80,000 per year so that he can avoid crowded trains.
Although Burns claims that he wouldn’t be able to take classified papers onto the trains, the revelation will only increase the view that the Coalition are out of touch with ordinary workers. Last year chancellor George Osborne had to pay for an upgrade after attempting to travel in the first class compartment on a standard ticket.
A spokesman for passengers’ campaign group Railfuture told the newspaper: “It would be nice if the person who is setting these fare rises was also experiencing some of the congestion and overcrowding endured by ordinary, hard-pressed travellers.”
